What is Fasting?

Fasting is the practice of intentionally denying ourselves physical and worldly comforts in order to draw closer to God through prayer and dependence. It helps tune our hearts to His voice and align us with His will.

Jesus said, “When you fast…” (Matthew 6:16–18), showing that fasting is not optional for believers but a vital spiritual discipline. Through fasting, we acknowledge that our strength and satisfaction come from God alone, not from food, entertainment or distraction.

What Is Prayer and Why Is It Important?

Prayer is central to our faith at Epiphany Brooklyn. It is something Jesus modeled for us and taught us to practice. Prayer is how we stay rooted in God’s presence, shaped by Jesus and connected to one another.

Prayer is not about perfect words. It is about showing up honestly before God and learning to notice where He is already at work. Through prayer, we are formed into people of love, humility, courage and faithfulness, aligning our lives more closely with the way of Jesus.

Prayer is also an act of trust in God’s faithfulness, even in seasons of uncertainty.

What Is a Shut-In? (And No, You Will Not Be Locked in the Basement.)

A shut-in is a sacred prayer experience where we intentionally set aside extended time to seek God together as a community—yes, overnight. Traditionally, church shut-ins were all-night gatherings centered on prayer, worship, teaching, testimony and fasting, creating space to linger with God without distraction.

In that same spirit, our shut-in, Awake, O Sleeper invites us to slow down, remain present and collectively listen for God’s voice. Think old-school shut-in, Epiphany style. We are trusting God to meet us as we choose devotion, endurance and togetherness.

Rooted in Ephesians 5:14, this night serves as a call to spiritual awakening, revival and deeper commitment as we step into the year ahead.

Guests are welcome to attend for the full evening or leave whenever they feel most comfortable. You are never required to stay, though we hope you’ll choose to remain with us through the night and join us for a light breakfast in the morning.

I didn’t sign up for a prayer slot. Can I still join the prayer call?

Yes. Even if you did not sign up for a prayer slot, you are welcome to join the call. Simply click the Join the Prayer Call button at the top of the page to listen in and pray alongside the person praying. You will automatically be muted when you join, and we ask that you remain muted to help keep the space focused and distraction-free.
